Pets such as service dogs, guide dogs, and assistance animals are often the best examples of emotional support animals because they help people with disabilities and their pets in many ways. The definition of an emotional support can sometimes be difficult. As a general rule, however, these animals are those animals that a person looks to have in their home when they can’t be there for themselves. That includes animals that help protect those with disabilities or the elderly. And, even if you don’t have a service animal registry, ASPCA does require that you get a letter from your doctor indicating that he’d prefer that your pet be kept inside your home instead of on the street. Pets can be designated as “companion animals” if you have other animals that you take outside.
To get started, call the ASPCA office near you and speak to an associate who will walk you through the process. Usually, it takes a week to complete the registration because it includes a doctor’s letter, a description of your dog, and other information. You can get a prescription letter from your vet that allows your dog to have access to the emotional support group homes that are provided through the ASPCA.
There are many different benefits to having an emotional support pet registered with ASPCA. The dogs that are in the program have been screened by an expert team to ensure that they don’t have any behavioral issues or physical problems that would make them unsafe around other people. In addition, the dogs have all been given a clean bill of health, and you’ll never have to worry about having to take them to the veterinarian for a pre-purchase health checkup. The emotional support dogs that come to these organizations have gone through numerous psychological and medical assessments to ensure that they are healthy enough to join the program.
Once you meet all the requirements of your emotional support animal’s registration, you and your four legged friend can head to one of the designated facilities where your pet will live out their days. You can also choose to visit one of the shelters, or visit one of the animal rescue groups that help these dogs by housing them in loving foster homes. Many of these pets will have been abused and neglected in their previous lives and will have behavioral issues that need to be addressed before they can become adoptable. When you register your dog, he will have a name and a number that can be called when called for a visit.
