The Benefits of Pet Care and the Existence of Emotional Support Animals

Posted by

There are many requirements for owning an emotional support animal. The requirements are that the owner provide a loving and supportive environment for the animal. An emotional support animal is required to assist a disabled or handicapped person in their everyday activities including but not limited to; toilet training, walking, bathing, and medication reminders. The animals provide the companion the handicapped person needs when they cannot perform these tasks on their own. This is most common with elderly and disabled people.

The emotional support animals can be a dog, cat, rabbit, or any other animal that gives affection and a non-judgmental attitude towards the owner and the handicapped person. These three types of pets are also commonly known as therapy pets. These three are very popular and there are many organizations that help match dogs, cats, rabbits and other pets with appropriate environments.

The third type of animal must have certain vaccinations and also be kept under a particular custody agreement. The psychiatric service animals must have a valid license from their local government that will protect them from being euthanized without due process. The animal must also be micro chipped and have its tags worn with a tag identification card provided by the organization that provides the services. Some states also require that the pet have a microchip to be scanned to verify identity and ensure that the animal is free of disease.

Anyone looking to adopt a pet can contact the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or ASPCA to find out more information. If you do not live in the United States, you can search the World Wide Web for information on where to adopt a pet in your area. The ASPCA has specific websites that provide information on all of the ASPCA’s requirements for adopting an emotional support animal. You will need to fill out an application that includes a contact phone number, address and all of the contact information for the animal you are looking to adopt.

Once you have filled out this application and have been approved, you will then be asked to meet with an ASPCA Board of Directors to discuss your pet and answer any questions they may have. ASPCA staff members will ask some very pertinent questions about your home environment as well as the history of your pets and other information that will help them make a determination if your pet is eligible for emotional support or psychiatric service animals. Once you have been approved, you will be given an adoption certificate upon which a photograph of your pet will be printed. You will then be able to take your new pet home with you.

There are several different types of emotional support animals including: rescue animals, certified therapy pets, blind and deaf service dogs, guide and pet service dogs, diabetic service dogs and cancer support dogs. All of these animals are there to give a trained individual a helping hand that can recognize and react to emotional issues in the patient. Pets can provide companionship, therapy or relief from a condition or disease that is causing the patient great discomfort or pain. If you are interested in learning more about these animals, or any other types of pets, please visit the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or any other ASPCA website.
